Wildfire Mitigation
Wildfire Mitigation
Wildfire mitigation is vital in protecting your house against wildfires. Drought conditions, overgrown forests are the recipe for a wildfire that destroys homes, properties, put people’s lives at risk. Wildfire is unpredictable and dangerous but we can help you take steps to protect your house by wildfire mitigating your property.
Wildfire mitigation is all about creating a defensible space around your house. Defensible area is an area around a structure where fuels and vegetation are cleared or reduced to slow the spread of wildfire toward the structure. It consists of 3 zones which require different levels of wildfire mitigation.
- Do not plant anything 3-5 feet if the structure;
- Prune and maintain plants on a regular basis;
- Remove dead branches, stems and leaves
- Remove all trees
- If you choose to keep the trees, prune the trees to at least 10 feet above ground, remove any branches that touch the roof and clear cut all “ladder fuels” under the tree
- Clean roof and gutters of pine needles and leaves at least twice a year.
Wildfire mitigation in zone 2 is aimed at reducing the intensity of approaching fire. The size of this area and level of wildfire mitigation that needs to be done depend on the terrain. Wildfire mitigation in this zone usually consists of:
- Thinning trees and large shrubs
- Pruning trees
- Removing dead trees and shrubs
- Removing “ladder fuels” under trees
- Disposing of all slash and debris
- Mowing grasses
